Damian Vega as the legendary Broadway star William Gillette, known for playing Sherlock Holmes.

Gillette was real, but here the playwright has made him into a character in the comedy "Ken Ludwig's The Game's Afoot; Or Holmes for the Holidays." Ready for a hilarious whodunit? Set during the Christmas holidays in 1936, “The Game’s Afoot” takes us into the Connecticut castle of Broadway star William Gillette (Damian Vega), widely renowned for his stage turns as Sherlock Holmes. The weekend party is all fun and games until one of the guests gets murdered, and Gillette realizes he’ll have to play Sherlock for real. Think of the show as “Blithe Spirit” meets “The Hollow” — and we’re thrilled to have “Blithe Spirit” director Mark Anderson Phillips at the helm! The show runs Nov. 16-Dec. 17 at City Lights Theater Company, 529 S. Second St., downtown San Jose. Details and tickets at cltc.org/games-afoot. “The Game’s Afoot” is generously supported by Producer Charlie McCollum and Producer Clint Moore, and by Season Producers Nancy B. Coleman & Paul M. Resch.

The Hollow

The Hollow previewed Feb. 3 and 4, and then ran Feb. 5-March 6. Showtimes are Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.

  • City Lights Theater Company 529 South 2nd Street, San Jose, CA, 95112

There’s a wife and a husband, a mistress and a movie star, and plenty of other people tangled up in romantic situations, but only one of them does the deed. And by “deed,” we mean “murder.” After all, this is an Agatha Christie play. With classic mystery and surprising humor, The Hollow takes audiences into a lovely English country house on one very eventful weekend. Bring your alibis.

Damian Vega played Husband / Harrison

What happens when life and art get a little too cozy? "Stage Kiss" follows two actors with a history. After they're cast opposite each other again, the lines start to blur. "When I kissed you just now, did it feel like an actor kissing an actor or a person kissing a person?" the leading lady asks. Either way, the show must go on – consequences be damned.

"Stage Kiss" runs through Feb. 16 and is supported by Producers Sandra Moll & Rick Holden. Tix & info: cltc.org.

Reverend Parris in "The Crucible"

Crucible-E-card.jpg

By Arthur Miller

Directed by Jeffrey Lo

Arthur Miller’s seminal theatrical work was originally written as an allegory for McCarthyism cloaked in the environment of 17th Century Salem, Massachusetts. Winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play, The Crucible is more relevant now than ever, reminding us that while the targets may change, hysteria, fear-mongering, and scare tactics will always pose a threat to American civility and liberty.

James in "Circle Mirror Transformation"

LASC-CMT-Prog-004-1.jpg

By Annie Baker

Directed by Virginia Drake

In an artsy small town, an unlikely collection of strangers sign up for Marty's "Adult Creative Drama" class: a recently divorced carpenter, a high school junior, a former actress, and Marty's husband. Unfolding like a charmingly funny indie film, the group plays Marty's imaginative (and sometimes awkward) theatre games. But as their relationships develop over the course of the summer, the seemingly silly games generate some real-life drama. This delightful comedy from new playwright Annie Baker landed on Top Ten lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker for 2010.
